Marina Ibiza and TrueWorld set sail for a more inclusive Mediterranean

-

At TrueWorld, we believe meaningful climate action must include everyone. That is why we are proud to share one of our most rewarding projects in recent months: the inclusive sailing trips we organise with Marina Ibiza aboard Galaxie, the first fully electric sail training vessel over 20 metres in the Balearic Islands.

Since early 2025, Galaxie has been based at Marina Ibiza, welcoming groups of schoolchildren and adults from APNEEF(the Association for People with Special Needs in Ibiza and Formentera, now known as Com Tu!), the Consell d’Eivissaand AMADIBA. Organised by TrueWorld as part of the Love The Mediterranean initiative, these trips have a clear purpose: to make climate action accessible to everyone and help people connect with nature, discover marine biodiversity and develop a deeper respect for the sea.

A historic sailing vessel, transformed for the future

Galaxie is a historic 21-metre sailing vessel that has circumnavigated the globe twice. It was donated to Fundació Joves Navegants to provide sail training for young people from the islands, particularly those with fewer opportunities.

Over fifteen months, we replaced its diesel engine with a fully electric propulsion system from PhoenixOne, powered by lithium batteries that provide between eight and ten hours of operation. The conversion was supported by a grant to decarbonise the nautical sector from the Balearic Government’s Directorate-General for Energy, financed through the European Union’s NextGenerationEU funds. The vessel was unveiled in April 2024 at Alcudiamar and the Palma International Boat Show, where hundreds of young people had the chance to step aboard.

Emission-free sailing, learning without barriers

Each outing is much more than a boat trip. On board, participants discover how a vessel can operate without fossil fuels, get a close look at the marine ecosystems around Ibiza and Formentera, and learn why the Mediterranean, which is warming faster than the global average, needs us all to play a part in protecting it.

Yet what has stayed with us most cannot be captured by a performance indicator: the smiles, the growing confidence and the joy of people who, in many cases, were stepping aboard a sailing boat for the very first time. The head of a special education centre in Sant Josep described the experience as a day that brought a real sense of wellbeing to her pupils. For us, that is the true measure of the project’s success.

A shared commitment with Marina Ibiza

Marina Ibiza has played an active role in the project, offering much more than a home port. Its commitment to protecting the marine environment aligns closely with our vision of a sustainable nautical sector that welcomes everyone. In May 2025, Galaxie also raced under the Marina Ibiza flag in the ninth APD Crossing Regatta and took first place, showing that an electric sailing vessel can compete at the highest level.

This project directly supports several Sustainable Development Goals: Climate Action (SDG 13), Life Below Water (SDG 14) and Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10). At TrueWorld, we will continue bringing technology, science and social impact together to make the sea a place where everyone has the opportunity to learn.

Our thanks go to Marina Ibiza, APNEEF, AMADIBA, the Consell d’Eivissa and everyone who has joined us aboard Galaxie. Together, we sail on.

Year 2017: the One Planet Summit is held in Paris - second anniversary of the Paris Agreement - 12 organizations that work in Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT - Blockchain) agree to collaborate and establish a global initiative, the Climate Chain Coalition is born. Two years later, more than 100 companies and institutions are part of this chain with a main objective: to drawdown climate change. Year 2020: TrueWorld Organization (TW) is established, an organization that monitors, in real time thanks to Blockchain technology, all the factors that affect the environment and climate change to make all the information available to society in an accessible and universal manner. TW joins the CCC to pool resources and knowledge and achieve solutions against climate change globally. The DLT system allows measuring, reporting and verifying the impact of all types of operations or processes and the mobilization of climate finance from diversified sources. The potential of Blockchain technology is key in the process of climate change action. It can improve the transparency, accountability and traceability of green gas house emissions as it can support companies and public entities in their process of providing and tracking data in an honest, standardized and accurate manner. The blockchain, unlike centralized networks, was designed to avoid monopoly control of the system. The technology records transactions in an open and permanent way, thus promoting transparency and security. Transactions are peer-to-peer thus eliminating intermediaries. Blockchain has different applications related to the fight against climate change. TW, in addition to the use of blockchain, gathers data and information through the use of smart sensor systems, which gives it the potential to automate and strengthen the monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of the environmental impact projects. All of this results in an increase in trust among the actors involved in this type of projects. TW is committed to complying with the standards of truthfulness, transparency and innovation that the CCC has as principles, in addition to working under the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.
