Moving from describing what is happening to anticipating what could happen next. That was the idea behind the opening remarks from Antoni Costa, Vice-President and Regional Minister, at “From Data Spaces to Digital Twins”, an event organised by Fundació Bit at ParcBit. Bringing together 131 participants, the event highlighted how well placed the Balearic Islands are to become a living laboratory for digital twins.
We were delighted to take part, with our CEO, Marco Mendoza, presenting TrueWorld’s predictive models for sustainable tourism destinations.
Planning ahead rather than reacting
A digital twin is a virtual replica of a place, building or system, fed by real-world data, that allows users to simulate potential scenarios. For a tourism destination, this means anticipating how occupancy levels could affect water demand, energy use, waste generation and ecosystems, and making informed decisions in time to act.
That is exactly what our models are designed to do: help public authorities and businesses anticipate pressures on a destination and plan tourism that does not deplete the resources it depends on. This approach reflects the vision set out by the Balearic Government during the event: using digital transformation to support sustainable tourism and improve quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
A strong network of expertise
The event showcased the strength of the Balearic Islands’ data and digital twin ecosystem. We joined institutions including the Balearic Government, the Balearic Islands Tourism Strategy Agency (AETIB), IBESTAT, the Balearic Energy Institute, Palma City Council, the University of the Balearic Islands, SOCIB and IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB).
Also taking part were businesses applying these technologies across a wide range of fields: Open Cosmos, with its coastal observation satellite; WDNA and HIDROBAL, working on smart water management; Sampol, improving energy efficiency in buildings and hotels; Hotelverse and EISI Soft, developing digital twins for hotels; and AnySolution, contributing to the European DEPLOYTOUR tourism data space project. They were joined by Damavis Studio, IoT Foundations, TUI, Mirai, Turistec and GsBIT.
Thank you to Fundació Bit and its entire team for organising such a valuable event, and to all the speakers for sharing their expertise. Together, we are helping shape smarter, more sustainable islands.
