Calculating an event’s emissions once it is over matters. But understanding its impact as it unfolds, and identifying where improvements can be made, matters even more. That is the step we are taking at the 44th Copa del Rey MAPFRE with SMART NetZero, our technology solution for integrating, managing and visualising environmental information in real time.
A longstanding partnership
For several years, TrueWorld has worked with the Copa del Rey MAPFRE, MAPFRE and the Real Club Náutico de Palma to measure and monitor the regatta’s environmental impact. This partnership has already delivered significant milestones, including the 40th edition becoming the world’s first sailing competition to receive validated carbon footprint certification and the sustainability plan for the 42nd edition.
A Net Zero plan developed together
Together with the Real Club Náutico de Palma, we have developed the regatta’s Net Zero Strategic Sustainability Plan. This comprehensive action plan places decarbonisation, circularity, environmental responsibility and positive impact at the heart of its long-term transformation.
The plan follows the principles of the GHG Protocol and the ISO 14064 standard. The footprint calculation covers all event locations: the club, the Bay of Palma and venues across the city hosting regatta activities. All processes, indicators and results are audited by an independent external verifier.
What SMART NetZero brings to the regatta
SMART NetZero allows us to track the regatta’s key environmental indicators in real time, including its carbon footprint, water footprint, energy consumption and air quality, giving the organisers a comprehensive, reliable picture of its impact.
All data is traceable and verifiable, with clear visual displays that help the regatta team understand the information and use it to inform decisions.
The full set of regatta data, from parameters and calculations to reports, will be openly available to the public and the scientific community through a dedicated URL, allowing anyone to examine and verify the information.
Beyond the final footprint calculation
At the 44th edition, this technology takes us beyond calculating emissions once the regatta is over. SMART NetZero helps us measure and understand the event’s impact and identify opportunities for improvement while it is still underway, supporting increasingly efficient and sustainable event management.
Results: a 30% reduction in emissions
Rigorous measurement makes progress visible. Between the 2024 and 2025 editions, the regatta’s total carbon footprint fell by 30%. Carbon footprint reports from recent editions are all available on the Copa del Rey MAPFRE sustainability website.
